Self Drive To Murchison Falls: Route, Ferry & Vehicle Tips

Self Drive to Murchison Falls: Route, Ferry & Vehicle Tips

A self drive to Murchison Falls is one of the best road trips in Uganda. The route is mostly tarmac, the park is easy to explore at your own pace, and you get to watch the Nile force itself through a narrow gorge before dropping into the pool below. It is also a trip where small details matter, such as the ferry timetable, the tsetse flies and the black cotton soil that turns slippery in the rain.

This guide takes you from Kampala to the park gate, explains the Paraa ferry, and helps you choose the right vehicle. When you are ready to book, just contact us by emailing to [email protected] or calling/ chatting with the reservations team on +256-700135510.

About Murchison Falls National Park

3 Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari

Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park, in the northwest of the country. The Nile flows through the park, and at the falls it squeezes through a gap of about 7 metres wide before dropping roughly 43 metres. You can see the falls from the top by walking up, or from below on a boat cruise from Paraa.

The park is split by the river into a southern and northern bank. Most of the classic game viewing, with elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions and many antelope species, is on the northern bank. Because the two sides are joined by the Paraa ferry, your timing matters.

Best routes for a self drive to Murchison Falls

Route 1: Kampala to Masindi to the southern gates

This is the most common route. You drive Kampala, Luweero, Nakasongola, Kafu and Masindi, which is all tarmac. From Masindi you continue to a southern gate such as Kichumbanyobo or Bugungu, then on to Paraa. Allow about 5 to 6 hours in total, longer with stops.

A good stop on the way is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you can track rhinos on foot. Rhinos no longer live in Murchison itself, so this is the best chance to see them on the same trip.

Route 2: Through Hoima and Buliisa

If you are coming from the west, you can reach the park through Hoima and Buliisa. The roads here have been improving, but conditions vary, so check with your lodge before leaving.

Route 3: From the north through Gulu

Travellers coming from Kidepo or northern Uganda can enter through Gulu, Pakwach and the northern gates, such as Tangi. This route lets you start on the northern bank without using the ferry.

How the Paraa ferry crossing works

The ferry at Paraa carries vehicles across the Nile between the southern and northern banks. A few things to know:

ferry crossing

#ferry-crossing

  • It runs on a daytime schedule, so confirm the current times at the park or with your lodge.
  • Queues can build up in the morning and late afternoon, so plan your game drive around the crossings.
  • The crossing itself is short, but the waiting can add time.
  • Always check the current fees for the crossing with the park authority.

If your lodge is on the north bank, aim to cross early so you do not miss the best light for wildlife.

Road conditions to expect

  • Kampala to Masindi: good tarmac with busy trading centres and speed bumps.
  • Masindi to the park gates: mixed surface, so drive carefully and allow extra time.
  • Inside the park: murram and dirt tracks, which are easy in the dry season.
  • Rainy seasons (March to May and September to November): the soil in the north can turn sticky and slippery, so a 4×4 matters.
  • Dry months (December to February and June to August): better road conditions and good wildlife viewing.

Fill your tank in Masindi before entering the park, since fuel inside or near the park is limited.

Best vehicle for a self drive to Murchison Falls

land cruiser prado

You do not need an extreme off-road machine, but you do want reliable ground clearance and traction. The Land Cruiser Prado is a strong choice. It handles park tracks comfortably, has space for luggage and gives you a higher viewpoint for spotting wildlife. At the time of writing it is listed from US$80 per day excluding fuel.

A smaller SUV can work in the dry season if you stick to the main tracks. In the rains, choose a proper 4×4.

Tips for driving inside the park

  • Tsetse flies: keep your windows closed in bushy areas and wear neutral colours, as bright blue and black attract them.
  • Wildlife: keep a safe distance from elephants and buffaloes, and never leave the vehicle outside designated areas.
  • Speed: drive slowly, since animals cross the tracks without warning.
  • Timing: morning and late afternoon give the best game viewing, and you should be out of the park before dark.
  • Navigation: carry offline maps, because signal is patchy.
  • Fees: park entry and vehicle fees are paid separately, so check the current rates with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

A simple 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, then on to Masindi and Paraa for the night.
  2. Day 2: Morning game drive on the north bank, then a boat cruise to the bottom of the falls.
  3. Day 3: Hike to the top of the falls, then drive back to Kampala.

If you have more time, add a chimpanzee trek in nearby Budongo Forest.
