History Background

Initially the park was gazetted as a controlled hunting area in 1933 and in in the 1963, it was declared a game reserve. The area remained a grazing place for the Banyankole-Bahima Residents not until it was declared a national park in 1983. The intention of up-grading the game reserve to a national park is to evict Banyankole pastoralist from grazing their cattle in the reserve. Although the Bahima continued to graze their cattle in the reserve, killed many wildlife and part of the area was cultivated into farmlands in revenge against the Obote government. In the 1986, during the NRM government, the park was re-gazetted and declared the smallest national park in Uganda.

Location of Lake Mburo National Park

The park is situated along the Masaka-Mbarara highway on the Road connecting Kampala to other national parks in West. The park covers the districts of Lyantonde and Kiruhura district in the western part of Uganda. From Kampala capital city of Uganda to Lake Mburo national park, it is about 240 kilometers and from Mbarara town to the park, it is located approximately 30- kilometers by road. Lake Mburo national park can be accessed by either Air or Road transport. From Entebbe international airport or Kampala, it is about 4 hours or 3 hours drive respectively.

Climate

The park is strategically located in the shadow of Lake Victoria as well as Mount Rwenzori. This has allowed an average annual rainfall of about 789mm per year.

It is important to note the park is open to all visitors through out the year but the best time to visit is during the dry season the roads leading to park are dry and easy to navigate through especially in the months of June to October and December to February the annual dry seasons.

The wet season is quite challenging to access the park, it is characterized with heavy rains that make the roads muddy, wet and slippery thus game drive is difficulty and, in this case, you need a 4×4 safari Vehicle to explore the park.
